A friend of mine has started mining and I want to aswell, how do I start

so why don't you just ask your friend! just type btc mining on google.

Dont expect to be competitive in any way with your PC computer. The difficulty of mining bitcoin has long since reached the level that special hardware acceleration is needed for it to be profitable enough to even cover your computers electricity bill of performing calulations.

you need to have a good video card and join on a pool and download the disired mining software for that pool and for that coin.
