I'm shy myself. Recently changed and got over social anxiety, but I still find it hard to talk with some people, especially if we are not sharing the same interests. And talking about regular things makes convo dead, and then there's just 1-word answer and convo dies.

Try talk about any themes or ask him about his interests

Just don't talk to him/her i don't know

Find out his/her interests first then see if you are interested in their hobbys/themes and vice versa.

If not then it's quite a problem to have a decent conversation that doesn't end weird.

honestly just create small talk until you find some common ground, ask about their weekend and what they did and from that slowly piece together what they like

People ALWAYS have something in common with somebody else. Ask them more about their interests, until you both have something to talk about.
