Every bitcoin transaction is logged and can be looked up. However this all rolls back only to a wallet. As long as no one knows and you don't post your wallet anywhere, no one can know who or where it came from. Now, add in IP tracing, etc... anything can be traced with enough time, money and resources.

I'm certainly no expert, but when I made some simple transactions (even using a bitcoin mixer), there were still clues which indicated the initial payment came from a particular source. Like the other person said though, for anonynomity, I guess the place you buy from is the most important thing (i.e. a p2p network, rather than a site in which you need to sign up with personal details)

it is not 100% anonymous. Every transaction is being logged in the blockchain. If you know someone his address, you can see all the transactions

its not 100% if you try to do anything like on the deepweb or anything illegal the police will be able to track you down if you aren't careful enough. However if your just trading essentially then yeah it is for the most part.

joeyvanderbrink, what does that have to do with anonymity though? You might be able to track a bitcoin from the moment it is mined to now, but that doesn't mean that you know the identity of anyone who owns the wallets.

The question is somewhat vague, are you asking if bitcoins are anonymous, or are you asking if they can be traced - and if you're asking whether they can be traced, are you asking whether you can identify the entire life of a bitcoin (every wallet it has ever been contained in) or whether you can trace a bitcoin back to a person?

If you need more anonymity use Monero for your transaction is the hardest to trace.
