If you have a good and big team the server gets popular, but if you just have kids in your team, you don't need to make one...
If you only want to make money with a gmod server then I can tell you that you're to late, the big servers are faster.

If you grow your community and actually make it worth it to donate, then yeah. Also don't encourage people to donate by making it P2W.

If you're making a gmod server just to get profit, then you'll already have some issues. Try simply developing the server and a community first, monetisation should come afterwards. Even if you make a fairly good server, actually getting anywhere with monetisation is a throw of the dice so just work on getting people to stick around before you work on getting them to donate.

It could be profitableif you can make the server run and add gameplay to it asap, since you're still paying for electricity you have to make sure you have a big enough population on your server,

I wouldn't make a profit for it and here's why. Mainly, I wouldn't use it for a job or a way to make money. It will not generate enough money to do so. Unless you run servers that have easily 1000+ players in a group alone don't count on it. It can be profitable, but it's a high gamble. The number of add-ons and ideas and struggles you will come across will be in your way. It's easy to disregard my words, but I've owned and Operated countless communities and have made some serious cash, but I used that to fund better add-ons, private Hosts, and custom content. It's about doing it because you like to, not because you like the money that comes into your PayPal you will inevitably lose to better fund this project. Please, don't try to turn gmod into a business; you will fail.

I 100% percent believe that if you run a flawless GMod server with a great staff team, it will be profitable without a doubt. Advertisation and whatnot may be difficult because you can't exactly open a server and expect people to flood in. That's where forums come into play or even discords that allow advertising.

wise words. but i agree with you. one needs to run multiple servers. with 100+ slots per server to make a decent amount of money. running gmod servers is like an extra money it's like why not do it.
if you're not experienced though. you will have a hard time and will probably quit mid way.
