It depends on what you're trying to download. My general rule is if it's an executable file I don't trust it, but any other static files like .txt or .jpg or whatever are most likely safe.

Use your head whilst downloading anything, also a good tip is to look at the posters posts & reputation. If they are new you might want to watch out, if they are well known it is more likely it's legit and without viruses.

Just remember to keep your system and av up to date.
