It's dead in the way that people don't want to "play" it. But it's definitely not dead in the way that people want to "watch" it still. I remember watching a streamer start up minecraft just a few weeks ago and had 7k viewers. It was crazy, I normally follow his stream and he gets about 4k viewers on an average basis.

As a server owner, I don't think so; just that the community has changed as the original players have grown out of it and moved on.

This, I was a developer on a community making Bukkit plugins (then Spigot once Bukkit was taken down).

Basically, everyone moved on after we were down for a while. They all said maybe it was time to give up as starting over didn't seem fun, getting everything they had etc

New people came in but, it wasn't quite the same as beta days. Mostly everyone decided to move on at once. Left the server mostly barren and no one really wanted to come into that. It's tough times trying to start out; new players just want big mini-games not survival etc

It's slowly dying, you can look at server list websites and planet minecraft on alexa.com. Their ranks are slowly falling while "fort nite" is rising. First of all It began to die starting with wolverness killing off bukkit, which destabilized the whole server hosting community, then the 1.9 combat update, then 1.11 fully ruining pvp. Overall the game is becoming worse with each update, it was updated well until 1.9, but I doubt Microsoft would care about it anymore.

I'm part of a big Minecraft Server owners group. It has definitely been dying out although it's a game that can be played forever. Especially for younger kids now. A lot of people grew up with Minecraft but are now over it.

I don't think it's dying, the target playerbase is just changing overtime. As people grow older it feels to them like it's dying, but really it's booming in younger generations, the older one just doesn't know that
