I go all the time. Your experience will vary depending on the area you visit.

Tokyo is a big place, and while your experience will vary greatly every time you visit, it will generally be centered around city life. Nagasaki is a much more quiet and calmer city. It's not too noteworthy, but like much of the rest of the country, it has many great views.

I've been a few times, and I can agree that each city or even town has its own 'feel' to it. I backpacked for a few weeks last year, just three changes of clothes and a hiking back. Best time of my life, probably going again when I graduate in 2021, or if I can score an exchange with my university.

If you do go, I recommend straying away from major tourist destinations if you can. I mean, definitely go for a few here and there just to see what the ancient culture is like (I mean temples, shrines, monuments) but stuff like the Sky Tree isn't that important and you could get by without visiting it. Especially since the wait times are ridiculous and the price is like 30$.
