Does anyone feel like minecraft is now a completely different game from when you first started playing. Like all the updates have completely changed the feel of the game.

Honestly? Yes, very yes. MC was originally just a game about building blocks, which of course it is now too. But now we have stuff like Redstone, two The End/Nether, villagers and villages, and so on, some of it just so obscure that you won't even know it's there until you read it on the wiki.
But you know, in the end, you play the way you want to.

Minecraft in 2020 isn't the "real" Minecraft that was intended to be. It's still a good game but the spin-offs are terrible (for me) and the combat system 1.9+ it's awful. I only play with 1.8

Well you could always use bedrock with all the features of the latest update and have the old combat system you love. TBH bedrock for vanilla gameplay is probably the better option but for modding java all the way.

Yeah bedrock is also good but I play a lot of mods so Java it's the way. Also the 1.12.2 it's the one supported for mods in 2020
