I think it is better to upgade. Buy some used SDD and more RAM, and try it. You will be surprised how much faster it will be!
life is short -- you think you have time? no you don't

Well its depending on your needs, here what i did when i met the same problem 1.5 years ago, basically i did both, i bought a new dell laptop and i upgraded my older one, still going to do more upgrades my old asus i7 gaming laptop, also i am willing to build a new desktop with large monitor, maybe 2 of them.

Most laptops are very hard to upgrade in terms of hardware (CPU, GPU), I've always found them to be very limited in comparison to a desktop computer. Tell us what model you have and what your specs are? Maybe we are able to help you out.

Depends on the Specs you have in it right now.
If they are Quite Outdated i'd get a new one. Otherwise maybe get some good fast RAM and maybe an SSD M.2 if you can put that in your Laptop and that will make a difference.

well i would not spend money on such a machine, i would rather buy a new one and then invest on that.

take a loot the Huawei Matebook D (with the Ryzen 5 3500U with ssd and 1080p display), it's a great deal for the specs.

ive been looking at SSD's and more RAM and that alone is 3-400$ i mean it still beats the price of a new one but for the extra feww hundred or so i might try and find a laptop with evrything in it for a decent price
