Factions is a gamemode where you band together with other players to claim land/create bases and compete in a very large territory/power war. You can ally with other factions or war with other factions. It's largely a PvP-focused mode.

Is it where people make these TNT cannons to break into bases?

The typical factions plugin (this is what a server downloads to be able to do what isn't part of Vanilla Minecraft) allows users to create a faction with a simple command, usually /f creation (name of faction).
You are able to add members to your faction, and you earn money usually by selling blocks and items within a server store. You can use the money to place it within the faction bank (/f bank add/withdraw # ) and this can be used to purchase land and blocks to build a base. When you claim land, you pay a certain fee for that individual block, and no other person can break it except you and members of your faction.
The goal is to claim as much land possible, build a giant base to store loot and usually grow crops or harvest mobs for items to sell for more money, and use TNT and other methods to break into other factions' headquarters, raid their stuff, and repeat. The largest one standing is the winner.
TNT is the primary way of bypassing the fact you can't break their land on your own, but there are much creative ways, like charged creepers!

I'm going to need a detailed description on how to actually become a staff member. I'm actually an old Halo 2 community staff member, does that hold any significance when becoming staff in your minecraft server? Also you would need to buy me the game, as I do not own it.
