To those professional programmers out there, what are some of the "best" or most relavant programming language to learn or master in the industry (Not specified to any field) out there.

Personally I'm learning Java, but not sure how relavant it is to the industry out there and how efficient it would be.

I prefer java because of the modification and the freedom to keep your skin the way you want

There is only GOD Language I know about, it's called JAVA, some people tell that it's slower than C but they are practically wrong. Java is used by a lot of corporations while C is used in low level stuff. I also dont understand the usefulness of pointers

Your reply is well appreciated! As I am not exposed to a lot of programming languages, therefore it is a piece of information for newbie like me.

In term of low level stuff for C, what are the stuffs that are used by C?

if you want to build some stuff and get a 9-5 then sure learn java. if you really want to know how pcs work then you need to learn c (just a little)

Any luck for people in Java who are self-taught or freelancing? They say Javais saturated with computer science professionals, only big enterprise guys are investing in Java based infrastructure. In freelance world, python and JavaScript are in peak utilization.

java devs are in very high supply. if you are struggling to get work it might be worth learning something else like javascript. if you can write java you will learn js quick

COBOL is in high demand, but it has a very small market. Invest time in new languages like Rustlang. I depends on what industry you are interested in. Python if you are into data science. PHP if you want a job quick. For freelance JavaScript and Web Design languages are popular. What really matters is creating full blown softwareproducts with your skills.

The first language doesn't matter that much, unless it's one of those that teach you bad habits. I'd also not recommend JavaScript as a first language because of its not-so intuitive quirks.

You'd use many different languages and environments throughout your career and you'd learn them whenever the need arise. It won't take much time once you've got the basic principles.

In general, if you want a 9-5 job in a big company, you might want to focus on C# or Java. And if you want to freelance in the web sphere, PHP (plus JavaScript) is a solid choice.
