Honestly I don't recommand to use Minecraft Realms for Java . Because you can't downgrade the version of the realms and you can't create a modded server with this service.

mods aren't supported by mojang, and it's logical, imagine if people can downgrade their realms, it will be a mess on their server
Tbh I think that is clearly not worth the money, not only that the server can lag sometimes and there's nothing you can do about it like upgrading to a better processor or stuff like that, you also can't install modified versions of a Minecraft server like Spigot, Forge and others. So if I were you I wouldn't buy a Realm because I can get way better servers and more flexible ones much cheaper.
For Java, absolutely not. Invest in servers, it's worth it. But if you want something on Bedrock you can enjoy go for Realms, as all platforms can access them. But of course, there are lots of downsides to it.
