Hi all,

Here's a few tips & tricks which could be useful for new players learning to play Roadhog. Let's first go through his abilities:

Scrap Gun (primary fire/left click)
  • 5 round clip
  • 25 pellets
  • 1.6-6 damage per pellet
  • Max 150 damage without headshots
Scrap Gun (secondary fire/right click)
  • 5 round clip
  • 9 meter range
  • Projectile chunk 50 damage expands into 25 pellets
  • 1.6-6 damage per pellet
  • Max 150 damage without headshots
Chain Hook (shift)
  • 8 second cooldown
  • 25 Meter range
  • 30 damage
Take a Breather (E)
  • 8 second cooldown
  • 0.5 second cast time
  • 1 second animation
  • 300 HP healed + 50% damage reduction while healing
Whole Hog (Q)
  • 12 pellets per shot, 7.5 shots per second
  • 0.5 second cast time, 6 second total animation
  • 5000 damage over 6 second
  • Can headshot, has knockback

The key to playing Roadhog is to knowing how and when to use your abilities. You should practice the chain hook combo which if you learn, you'll be able to take out squishy targets with one combo. The chain hook combo:
  • Chain Hook + Primary Fire + Melee
With this combo you should be able to take out 200 HP targets with one combo.

For harder to kill squishies you should do the following combo since you need to output more damage to secure the kill. In this case you should use the following combo:
  • Chain Hook + Primary Fire + Primary Fire
The reason why you do not want to do a melee attack on these targets is because the melee attack causes a small delay. So unless you know that the melee attack will kill them it's better to go for a second primary fire.

For tanks use the following combo:
  • Secondary Fire + Chain Hook + Primary Fire + Primary Fire
You need to output even more damage to tanks so it's a good idea to start with a seconday fire. The hook cancels the fire animation so you can shoot and instantly hook. If you follow up with two primary fire the target should be dead or very low on health.

Hooking a full HP tank is never a good idea unless you know you and your team mates are able to finish of the target fast. If you hook in a full HP Reinhart for example you're basically doing him a favour since he can probably survive long enough for his team to collapse on you.

If you practice these combos I'm sure you'll have more fun and success playing the Hog!
