Why do a lot of people think you can charge your phone supa speed it would literally just have so much slack it would melt the internals.

Airplane mode or turning off handset is unnecessary, you may miss important calls. Just switch it to 2G mode and you're fine.
Don't forget to force close battery killer apps.
