I think I witnessed a part of that. As far as I know NBB isn't the first forum to support profile covers and in my opinion there's nothing wrong with mimicking a nice design as long as it's not directly copied. It's weird if cake didn't state any source for the inspiration, though.

I'm not mad that there are profile banners. I have been on numerous forums with it before nbb. But the layout of the entire page looks so similar to nbb that you can't just pass it up

That's true. I'm not sure about it, but I think IPB invented this first. No one said, that it's an original idea or that we're the first to have this.
Just an easy argument to make himself look better in front of his community. ??

Well, usually I don't like to think about customizing a lot (I suck at graphics design) so... I think that's why, if I only got an internet img, that wouldn't be personallity though dont u think?
