So the TPB (The Pirate bay) has implemented a Javascript based cryptocurrency miner to the torrent site, meaning that the site will generate revenue through cryptocurrency, utilizing CPU power from visitors, on specific pages to generate XMR (Monero coins) which will hopefully replace ads.

There's currently no way to turn this off, besides delete and block the Javascript line (Ublock seems to do it), and cloudfare has already blocked one site already for implementing such a Javascript feature.

What's everyones thoughts, are you for it, or against it? I'm personally up for it, why not. It's a good way for sites to kill the middleman and earn revenue an alternative method.

It's fucking retarded. Once everyone sees TPB get away with it, you'll start to see it everywhere. Then the internet will be slow af.
I, for one, will be blocking this shit.

True, but torrent sites are closing left and right due to funding, and others are getting taken down. The MAFIAA are trying to target the TPB by reducing the amount of ads and trying to kill them at the source, so you have to credit their ingenuity at finding an alternative method to keep the cash stream flowing.

I don't honestly think it will. I mean, you can always downlock ublocker or a javascript blocker for most (if not all) browsers, and that solves the problem. Most dedicated people will opt to turn those off when they go and search around on those sites. I mean, it's throttled at like 0.3, which isn't a lot of CPU usage, a noticeable spike yeah, but not by much.

Lmao MaPhiAA
I recommend MinerBlock or No Coin.

And who's to say that there won't be a site that doesn't care and unlimits the bandwidth unlike TPB? That CPU usage will spike much higher than what it currently is at.

The way TPB implements it right now is very dynamic - they can feign ignorance and say "it's not us". For instance, they can make it only activate on certain banner ads, or once every 5th person, etc.

EDIT: Mind you that you can't opt out of it. CloudFlare suspended a torrent site where you couldactually opt out of it. On top of that, Coinhive is also trying to crack down on people who don't inform their users of the miner and don't provide an option to opt out. Makes you think about what kind of people are running TPB.

Valid point but its an alternative to being blasted by ads like hot singles in your area. I feel like thereshould be an option to choose ads or mining.

I'd take ads any day. At least people can actually seewhat's being done on their machines with ads. If someone implemented an invisible miner on a site, it would take those keen and paying attention to notice. It's not about it being an alternative, it's about what users are in control of. You can't even opt out of TPB mining without taking your own measures, and nowhere on their site did it say that they were currently mining.

There are private torrent trackers, that I'm a part of right now, that have already implemented this and had so before TPB choose to do so. They offer rewards for how many hashes you have done, which is rather clever.

TPB unlike ProxyBunker, did inform users, not the best I will say. Cloudfare also cancelled ProxyBunker because they've already done some sketchy things in the past, and their miner was throttled pretty insanely, that would cause users to notice an insane spike in CPU usage.

Granted they don't provide a OPT out method, but if you don't want to be part of it, just install UBlock or something like JavaScript Killer, and you're good. I'd rather have a harmless Java code using a minimal amount of CPU power, than a malicious advert running, with the only intentions of infecting people.

That said, each to their own opinion. Was good hearing yours.

It is reasonable method for monetising sites, however i think it should be voluntary. E.g. user allows miner if he wants to help the site. If it is not voluntary users will circumvent it using adblock anyway.

That's a pretty common thing I keep hearing. I assume people can block it themselves and opt in / out if they feel like it.
