I posted this on the official mybb forums some time ago and a few people got really butthurt cause of this.
Before I'd use bootstrap, I'd spend 100 hours making my own frontend.

I don't really get the point of both sides, some people really love it and others hate it. Would you mind explaining it?

Most of the sites which use bootstrap look the same. Just take a look at a few company websites or browse through the themes on themeforest.

Bootstrap has a lot of features to offer, CSS and JS wise, which is actually good, but to be honest, you're not going to use 50% of the shit anyways. If you really want to optimize your website in every possible way, you want to avoid to load any useless bytes of data. Which means you're going to spend a ton of time just to remove this shit. Of course you can make your own bootstrap package and use that what you want, but there will still be useless shit in there.

And the last point; a lot of creativity goes lost. If you make a design from scratch, you're starting to get creative and realize the ideas you have. With bootstrap, you can just google i.e.: "bootstrap testimonial layout" and copy/paste it to the template you're making.

Bootstrap is good which I won't deny and it offers a lot of stuff, but it doesn't offer something I couldn't make on my own.

That's just my point of view.

I agree with every single one of these points. It may be fine for a site that actually uses all or nearly all of the features, but all in all it's best to use it for fast prototyping (even then, there are lighter, better alternatives) and just to learn from it in the end.

All I really need is a responsive grid system and I'm good to go, really. The rest is all eyeballing it, testing on multiple devices, and optimization.

Thanks for that HQ answer, I now understand. That's what I was hearing and more or less understanding, now it got totally clear.
