That's the problem. when something becomescontroversial we [or at least I] can't say what we think without thinking it might be wrong. Take climate change: before I got into politics I thought that it was indisputable that climate change exists and that everyone knew it. but now, even though I did my research and viewed some meta-studies (studies that say what most studies say) I still think like I might just be wrong...

But I think it's for the best. I'm not sure if most, but a lot of people don't dare to question their opinions, and thus go only right or only left.
