I am stumped.... I was on my pc this morning, it was all fine. I lay down get back on and my keyboard and mouse suddenly don't work.

I plug them into the USB 2 slots and work. Moved my mic and cam to the USB 3 slots.

Device manager says all USB 3 hub is working, no little yellow triangle, but it appears to only power the device, not send any data.
I have an AS-rock z87 extreme 6, the bios says all usb hubs are enabled etc.

Things I have done:
  • Ensured they are fully plugged in / they are
  • Reinstalled USB hub software thing from mobo manufacture. / No changes
  • enabled and disabled in device manager / device manager insists all are up to date and working.
  • Switched USB's around / my mic receives power, as the red light is on.. but just doesn't work.
  • Tested front usb 3's / all work fine.
  • Checked Bios, all is enabled.

Any suggestions? also... I have never updated bios is it easy to do, because that is what a huge amount of google suggest.
Do you think something sort circuited and fried it or something?

So your keyboard and mouse don't work when plugged into the USB 3 slots? Hm... That's weird. I have no idea about the USB ports, but if they don't work, I'd suggest trying a different Keyboard/Mouse to see if it's a peripheral problem. If it is, try getting your Keyboard and Mouse RMA'd.

RMA is the process of returning faulty goods.

You should always update your BIOS if an update is available, all boards have an update utility these days. ASRocks is called Instant Flash I believe.

Have you had any power outages recently, or done a large amount of plugging/unplugging shit into the ports? This can cause damage to the USB 3 bus, USB 3 uses a separate power delivery system and also a separate chip so it is possible for USB 3 to stop working properly and USB 2 to work flawlessly.
Your mouse, keyboard and microphone should not be in a USB 3 port anyway as they don't need the bandwidth, thus it is wasteful and can cause compatibility problems.

Once you have the latest BIOS turn the PC off properly, then unplug it from the wall. Press the power button several times and leave it a minute. Boot it up and see if it works.

Some peripherals just gain hatred for the USB 3 interface after some time, my external HDD is USB 3 and no longer appreciates the interface thus locking it to USB 2. Obviously unlikely for multiple things to do this, so it is possible your bus is damaged or your OS is dungoofing. It would be better if you had a USB 3 storage key (a USB lel) that can perform faster than 48MB/s so you can see if it's the bus. To see if it's the OS would require a reinstall, or to dual boot another Windows or Linux and check it through that.

No power outages, and I rarely change anything int he back of my computer, this just was a sudden thing.
I don't use them because I want too. I just have more of the 3's ( 4) than the 2's (2) on the back of my pc. if that makes sense.

I have seen instant flash on my bios menu. So I know this sounds philistine... but do I just click it and it will do what it needs to do?

Thank you for the responses guys. I have learned much from this haha.

http://www.asrock.com/feature/instantflash/index.asp this implies if I click it.. I wont break my pc lol.

They should have on-screen instructions, the BIOS utility will literally be "select a file and wait". Use a USB in a USB 2 port.

I understand regarding your situation with more USB 3 ports than 2, but USB 3 can cause compatibility issues without drivers and as you now know can have problems randomly. USB 2 rarely suffers from failures or incompatibility. If a keyboard requires extra data rate or power, it'll come with another USB connector specifically for power. It's not common for peripherals that don't need USB 3, to come with a USB 3 connector.

It's unlikely to be your BIOS, but it should be updated regardless.
