Hello everyone,

For a long time, I didn't kept me busy with security and security related topics. But now I want to focus again on this subjects, I want to gain knowledge related to (ethical) hacking, pentesting, rev-engineering, malw& bots. Not only about using some tools and/or creating them, but also to secure system against them.

As an IT-student, I have some knowledge about some of the subjects and I've read once a lot about them. I also have programming knowledge.

What would you suggest me, where to start? Which books and tools will you suggest me? And which OS will you recommend me to run when I work on these subjects?
  • Kali
  • Ubuntu
  • Parrot Security
  • TEN
  • Subgraph
Sincerely,

Black Arch or Kali for sure.

I've got Kali both dual booted with windows on my laptop and bootable via a USB on my keychain. I'm an IT student in the field of web development and not too much for cyber security so i can't give my best shout on it but I've researched into Linux based OS' frequently over the past months. I can't suggest where to look and where to start, but one of the two operating systems that i provided would fancy you nicely.

For my VPSs I prefer CentOS 6 64 bit as CentOS is still the better one for me for web development. I like to use it in combo with Nginx. For desktop I'm still on Windows 7 Professional. I find that I can control Windows 7 better than I can control Windows 10. There are too many bells and whistles in Windows 10 that one is forced to take with much less control to control it.

I prefer Kali but it's really up to you which you should use, I have an old laptop with Kali exclusively and even though it's slow, it gets the job done.

Thank you very much for your responses! After some research, I decided to choose for Kali. Black Arch is also interesting, but it seems more complicated Smile

For VPS Centos 7, definitely. Also I prefer Plesk along with it. If you want free Admin Panel, Vesta is something I prefer more than Webmin.

I did not know BlackArch. I'm going to have to prove it.
