I was playing on a server with me mate, and he said to me whilst I questioned him about making a modded server (of course the way without forge) he said bukkit doesnt exist anymore, sure enough it doesnt, what happened to it?

Bukkit is still very much alive. Using either Spigot or Paper is a much better choice though, as they are more stable and offer far more customization options than Bukkit does. CraftBukkit however was DMCA'd. You can still download up-to-date versions of CraftBukkit on a website called YivesMirror. (Bukkit is an API that most servers use; Spigot is merely a fork)

Spigot is based off of CraftBukkit. Spigot continued where CraftBukkit left off. CraftBukkit was taken down by DMCA because of using mojang's official code in their own project.
