What makes gmod great to me?

Literally everything, many different gamemodes and lots of creativity although some people you meet can be annoying.

What makes it terrible? Servers trying to fuck over other servers just to get more players.

Some servers is creating just for money.. Or too much trolls, idiots in this game ;--;
But if you have much friends, and want play, then game i good ^^
