Wow why the hell do so many people use notepad++? I use visual studio for everything. It works fine and it has a WDK plugin which I need.

The IDEA line of IDE's is the ones I like most. It's build for power users (in my view) and supports many different plugins. It's not for everyone though, especially if you're looking for a simple editor for small projects.

IntelliJ for Java, Eclipse(Linux) or Visual Studio for C++, Notepad++ for anything else.

Visual Studio 2017 is awesome! I'm coding with that for everything. Websites, console app and the cool thing MS has just release for Mac as well.
