WhatsApp, a Facebook-owned messaging service that has more than two billion users, has recently announced controversial changes to its privacy terms, prompting a mass exodus of users to rival platforms, particularly Telegram and Signal.

According to the new terms, WhatsApp reserves the right to share user data, including location and phone number, with its parent company Facebook Inc and other apps owned by the social networking giant Instagram and Messenger.

The data sharing was optional until now, but after February 8 it will become mandatory. Tech experts say the move is aimed at monetising WhatsApp.

Do you use WhatsApp and are you still going to use it?

I mean it's pretty bad they're going to do this but let's be real, most of us won't leave WhatsApp. They have us hooked.

I think it's a numbers game. If the rival platforms get the numbers, then whatsapp use will decline over time. No platform is too big to die

They did have to change the date of the new rules (May 2021 instead of Feb) so it have a major affect. Few app suddenly gain 20-30 millions new installation overnight as well, but at end of the day it will still have big users

Signal is 1,000,000x better than WhatsApp. Additionally - Wickr is a great one. Both beat WhatsApp hands down.

The confusion with end to end encryption privacy is what gets me here. They had all that information before anyway, but I want to know if they're going to start being able to read my messages. I've recently downloaded telegram, and from what I understand this new data privacy change is just for better integration across facebooks apps, however it's not a change I'm particularly comfortable with as I use whatsapp because of its security and sense of privacy and also seeing other companies like apple speak out against this move leaves me slightly concerned for it.
