Why is rap/hip hop the most popular genre?

Rap/Hip Hop are most popular because of their history behind them. They were both genres of music that make a lot of noise in the 90's and mark by deaths, scandals, popularity and iconic songs.

I really like hip hop but not the current songs, I prefer classics like Biggie and NWA

Maybe because rappers dont need to be able to sing well so it is easier to produce? I dont know man some others have said that they are good lyricists but not most popular ones are pretty trash right now. Trap and mumble rap certainly isnt as good as the OGs.

Rap/Hip-Hop has always been a popular genre, If you were around in the 2000's you'd remember how big people like Eminem and Dr. Dre were. I think what has shot it into the mainstream currently is the fact that the "mainstream" genres of the last/current decade have gotten stale.

I think rap and hip-hop can basically be any genre in of itself. Like for example, there's rap and hip-hop songs about love, courage, betrayal, hatred, mindless indulgence, etc. I think it's taking these already existing genres and adding a funky beat behind it, and everybody likes a good beat.

Is it really the most popular world wide? I am not sure? I think it is mainly a US fad that never died honestly.

I think it is the storytelling...all of the best rappers are or where great storytellers...who doesn't like a good story

It's relatively simple and it's catchy. I can't really understand it beyond that. There are a handful of artists I enjoy, but most of it feels pretty immature and fake to me in recent time. That may be another reason for its popularity... Society is rather immature and fake.
