World War Ior theFirst World War, often abbreviated asWWIorWW1, was aglobal waroriginating inEuropethat lasted from 28July 1914 to 11November 1918. Contemporaneously known as theGreat War, theWorld War, and "the war to end all wars",[7]it led to the mobilisation of more than 70millionmilitary personnel, including 60million Europeans, making it one of the largest wars in history,[8][9]and also one of thedeadliest conflicts in history,[10]with an estimated 8.5million combatant deaths and 13million civiliandeaths as a direct result of the war.[11]Resulting genocidesand the related1918 Spanish flupandemic caused another 17100million deaths worldwide,[12][13]including an estimated 2.64million Spanish flu deaths in Europe and as many as 675,000 in the United States.[14]
