What are your choices? Its difficult but here are mine i guess
1. Flint/ferroceriumrod (anything to make fire really)
2. Some good rope/paracord
3. A hatchet
4. A knife
5. A tarp
This one is a classic but I'm curious what other people come up with.

Very clever, but wouldn't it be best to read the book beforehand and therefore have one extra item

You only get the book when you're already crashed as one of the items you receive while crashed, there is no opportunity to read it beforehand.

That's a fair point :D I'm about to take a look myself to see if there are any good survival handbooks.

Reminds me of this Youtube channel where a guy builds tools from absolute scratch, gathering all materials himself, smelting them and so on.
