is it better to do a split routine like push pull legs? or split it up more and do shoulder and chest etc on separate days?

I liked to have a set of exercises that focuses on a specific set of muscles on any given day. But that'd go alongside some more general ones so I would always have a bit of core/chest/arms.

Frankly I think rather than day to day, you should look at week to week and make sure you're working out each muscle group and not skipping. People can tell when you skip leg day.

Starting out, anything that is a routine with a controlled diet is better than trying to min-max your results. Personally, I would target each of your core muscle groups using compound exercises (squats, push-ups, pull-ups, shoulder presses, sit-ups) and spread out the exercises over the week so you're not overworking one or the other. Your desired goal also factors in a big way as this dictates how many reps or isolated exercises/cardio you throw into the mix. Generally speaking, create good habits that'll allow you to be consistent and most importantly, be sure that you're eating correctly so your body has everything it needs to begin transforming.

If you're new do whole body. A little more advanced split.

Try to use your body as a system rather than strict isolation training if you want more functional strength.

People tend to overlook that diet and proper recovery plays a larger role in getting bigger and stronger.

Any split works, as long as you're properly breaking down the muscle with training and rebuilding it stronger with a high protein diet. I personally like Push Pull Legs however, as the training is split comfortably to focus on each muscular function.
