is it profittable to open a server now?

The best chance of getting donations is by a lot of people! If you have people advertising the server its much easier to gain players.

I've had a profitable server before, it takes a lot of time though. And I stopped working on it because the time I spent on it was way too much and the profit was way too small.
Maybe it would have helped with a staff team, but I liked to do everything by myself.

To make successful profitable server you would have to give a lot of effort to it and it will take time, a lot of time and even then it could so low so it couldn't even pay itself.
If you want this for money then forget it and get a job. You can have something like this as a hobby but not as profitable business.

To gain money you have to give op item to the donator but this goes againts minecraft Eula so it isn't good

It takes a lot of work and tons of knowledge to get a server up and running to be profitable. But once it's up and you have the server out there and you advertise on server vote sites it is. I make $2,000-$3,000 USD on my server in one month.

You probably will profit if you make something different than other servers

If making a profitable server is your goal don't bother. Make a server for the players not for money.

Minecraft servers are always worth it, nice profit is always good XD

I think minecraft and garrys mod server make the most profit. But it needs a lot of work and advertisement.
