#1 sorry in advance for my garbage English grammar and spelling .
ive been playing guitar for about 15 years .
i feel like ive gotten good at guitar to actually the point where if i meet another guitarist or musician they more latley than not telling me how incredible i am at it.
i often get asked " dude how are you not making money with that thing?"
i think to myself well i just play for fun and never really tried to make a career of it .
so when someone tells me im incredible and that they would pay to see me really makes me feel greatfull but at the same time i dont feel like am that good . i dont look for the recognition i just enjoy playing the music or doing something thats difficult and challenging .
ive studied over the past year a lot of concepts for music theory.
up until about a year and half ago i could play quite well but never understood where to go or how to really write music or even read it .
well i looked over some basic concepts of scales and chords and extended chord tones (aka arpeggios) and stumbled upon the caged chord system
BOOM !!! Fucking door sent flying .
my dumbass of all people just crashed through onto a fucking map of musical enlightenment. all of the shit i practiced for years all came together . for my understanding of the guitars notes structure or pathways of connected notes on the fretboard .
i learned how to use the circle of 5ths also .
learned what triads are and how theyre apart of the major and minor scales
i learned how to pretty much figure out any song in like 3 steps
1. use pentatonic scale to find the songs key, using the first 2 notes of the pentatonic .
2. after you figure out the key you can use the circle of 5ths to figure out the chord progression
3. you use the major or minor scale to figure out the melody of the song
learning the caged system tho how over showed me how to use arpeggios in diffrent ways
i was able to figure out nearly perfect recreations of guitar solos or top teir instumental songs
if u play guitar and want to learn something worth your time learned all you can about chord tones and extended chord tones and the caged system .
any feedback welcome or if u have a question ill do my best to help

#2 Learning a song is quite different from learning to play guitar though. I've found that it's simple to learn a simple riff or pattern though it doesn't offer any actual transferrable skills.

#3 this is super interesting
i myself have been playing guitar for 10 years now and admittedly have never really delved into CAGED system or circle of fifths
but i feel like just having an understanding of how the notes are laid out on the fretboard and the repetitions and all has always really helped in having an understanding
so even though i wouldnt know theoretically what is going on, just having a solid footing in understanding the sounds of my instrument i think was really really important in being able to figure out songs and stuff easily
adam neely often says that music theory is good but its more of just that it puts definitions and langauge toi the things youre already doing
at the end music is just about expressing yourself and i think you can go really far without knowing even a little bit of theory
