I'm from London and went to UAL which is a big art school here. I'd say you don't need to go to art school unless you need to get specific contacts or build a specific portfolio and use university resources. Nowadays most creative professions like graphic designer can be self taught via YouTube and other online tutorials.

I'm currently SCAD studying Advertising and Branding (It's almost a combination of my 3 favorite mediums. Photography, Graphic Design, and Film) and so far my experiences are quite good as I get to learn more about the industry. But the technical skills mostly depend on self-learning. but it all comes down to your major or what you want to study. And if you can rack up scholarships then that's a plus. Art schools are just there to almost guarantee us jobs.

Probably not worth the money if I'm being completely honest when there is youtube, or even courses that cost less.

As someone who attended art school, I can tell you that I would have been better off having not gone. There are so many great resources online for a fraction of the price of most formal schools. There are some great Facebook groups like Conceptart.org and Level Up!

Hey there just wanted to chime in. I feel like its a good investment depending on how you learn and your personal life in general. I personally pick things up better in a school setting but that doesn't mean I can't learn at all on my own. I can't afford school so online is where I kinda force myself to learn.

I would never pay for more than a few thousand for an art school, since most probably it will not pay itself back financially. In terms of learning and personal development, you definitely should go! I just finished a 4 year bachelor in Graphic Design and I'm super happy with it!

It's not what you learn but the art worlds obsession of gate keeping others out, so if you want a chance of succeeding as an artist then you better get in at prestigious school. After that you do your masters at an even more prestigious school, preferably in another country than your bachelor. If you do anything that is remotely interesting then the schools are your ticket to ride.

Look at it as a sort of stamp of approval, it's either that or an incredible network due to coming from a family with deep contacts in the already established art world. Or you are one of those one in a million that somehow make it anyway.
