I'm in them midst of setting up one right now all by myself. Let me tell you, with all the work I've been doing the past 3 months, it's all been server dedicated work. However, I've only been able to dedicate my weekends to server coding / troubleshooting and web design I do 7 days a week. It was so much work at the beginning, that it made me want to quit so many times. Also, having to pay $20+ a month for my host, isn't too nice when you aren't even making money yet!

All and all, the work really does pay off. Just put in the time, and watch your hard work grow into something awesome.

It's much less of a hassle than peer-to-peer. I mean, you can just put a small collection of addons for people so they don't have to see errors and purple checkerboards flying around.

Yes It is you can get money for just hosting your own for free or not 100 % free cuz you are paying the electricity bill, but i am hosting a server and i think it is worth it..

It depends honestly, don't expect to become rich though. Usually only big communities make a good amount of money, good hosts aren't cheap. If you're planning on making a server, do it for fun, not money.

Server hosts just aren't taking GMOD as a serious game anymore.

Just look at Arma 3 servers for example : they can host like 100 players on a HUGE open world map, and this without any form of lag. GMOD ? 25 players on a small-ass map and the whole server will burn.

I think it is very worth it, never go into it with the mindset of getting money out of it at first. And generally all donation money should go back into the server or Community, but that is up to the Owner. It can be very gratifying to run a successful server that is packed every day.

I say do it, when you have money and a good plan. Make sure to run it smooth and don't go crazy with staff. Also have a good staff management. Good luck if you're doing a server

You don't really go into doing things like this for the money. You do it if you like to own a server.

As the title says; I understand that they are very cheap but so are peoples expectations when it comes to staff. Im not in it for the power, but rather just to have fun and maybe make a bit of money... but A. Should I just save the $10 and fuck around on a different server and B. Is it even viable to think I would make money?

My friend and i are currently hosting a Garry's Mod server and we just opened today. It's worth it if you're good at the Gamemode. You could either use a paid host or host from your home. I think it's pretty worth it if you wanna have fun but if you wanna make profit you really have to try hard to make whatever the Gamemode more immersive.
