From 10 years, I use only apache. Apache is more flexible and has easy to do configuration, when you know it. I have servers, and fast and good configuration is apache + php-fpm + redis cache + xcache + good configuration of it

I'd choose nginx, because it needs less resources.

Recommend nginx

if you are only picking one based off the resources it consumes then your choice is invalid. Both options when configured properly run just fine and can have the same level of security. Both have pros and cons just like everything in life. I guess my thought would be what are your plans with whatever your running? I have always ran apache simply because its what i am used to but in no way would i ever say it's better simply because both options serve the same purpose in the end. you can agually use nginx as a front end to apache to help deal with slow http attacks as well. so you can actually use both

I'm having this conflict myself right now.

How will the two handle working along side node.js ? As a proxy or what not

Nginx all the way. Far easier to configure, needs less resources and easier to maintain.

for a security standpoint either of them can be fine. Most of my servers are configured using Apache and Cloudlinux ( Very similar to centOS7) Using CloudLinux with Cage FS is a pretty solid setup. Trapping all hosting accounts in a virtual cage to prevent data leak from one client to another also allowing the proper resource limits help keep resource hogging sites limited if they are abusing your server.
