Unity is easier and more user-friendly than Unreal 4. BUT UR4 has blueprint programming, so it's also a bonus.
If you're looking to make 2D games, GameMaker and Godot are also good options, as well as RPG Maker for... Well, RPGs

It all depends on your skill level, your background, your preference, what kind of thing you are trying to make. It's as subjective as asking what the best musical instrument is.

Something I have purchased just to mess around with is Leadwerks & GameMaker. Like many things I wanted to start messing around with it but life just kept throwing things in the way

I think the general consensus is unity if you have the knowledge and skill. Not only that, it also depends on the type of game you want to make, is it 2D or 3D? There r a bunch of factors u need to take into consideration when making ur decision

i chose UE4. coz in my opnion ue can can give you more opportunities to implement your idea

i think unity is the best. you can build a proper game and get started for free. the programming isnt too hard to learn

I chose Unreal Engine because of visual programming, I switched from Unity to Unreal Engine - because Unity is unreal difficult. On Unreal Engine, on the third day, I created a game menu based on video tutorials from YouTube.

You're going to hate me, as far as GameMaker it's nothing unity or even unreal can do IMHO a waste of time. Unreal for some reason can have better visuals and along with actual c++ programming is as close to being an actual gamedev you use. Now Unity, my preferred choice even considering graphical fidelity not being on par with Unreal has the most learning resources available. Granted c# is not as advanced as c++ but for beginners it wouldn't make a difference anyway. There are Visual Scripters for Unity that make it GameMaker-ish if that's your thing, even making GameMaker even more useless. Assets: I don't know how it really compares to Unreal as many companies do assets for both but even now you'll still find more asset content for unity. Some of the better and more popular tutorials for unity are readily available on common torrent sites. Udemy is a great resource even if some of the content seems outdated there's a mix of new and old.

Also note GameDev programming isn't 3D or animation so hopefully you don't fall down the black hole of trying to learn to do it all on your own programming/graphics/animation. Each is it's own skill. Good luck in your programming endeavors.

Try looking up Unreal Engine 4 or Unity. Those are the big ones at the moment
