Unreal Engine for high-quality games. Unity for indie and arcades

Unreal Engine 4 is super good for realistic games + it has visual programming (Blueprints) which can help you create games without coding.

Depends on the type of game you want to make. If it's an AAA 3d cinematic, Michael Bay-ish thing and you've got the budget, go with Unreal Engine 4 (and let's hope the migration to UE5 will not be too painful, when it comes out... SOON) I have UE4 installed all the time and i just fiddle with it a lot, but i don;t have the budget for artists, so it's just fiddling, because i like it.

I'm a Java dev though, so the game I'm making is using mini2DX (https://mini2dx.org/) library for java (It's a 2D Dwarf Fotress-ish type rogue-like game, so the engine fits nicely). It's easy to get into, if you know how to code Java and there are loads of tile based resources all over the web, if you don't have the budget for artists.

Try Unreal Engine 4 or Unity

I think unity is the answer. Unreal is for big companies, not for newbies.
