I don't let people do whatever they want just to help the site grow. If they break the rules, they're out, simple as that.
You are simply setting down the line, its a real shame that he was a valued member(was, I mean clearly isn't now for said actions), but you are not treating him any different to how you would treat someone else if they broke the rules. That's respectable.
