I have no clue if it's dead or not, my assumption is that it's still alive and doing kind of well. I lost interest in it when Notch gave Minecraft to Microsoft though.

There are a lot less people playing, but it hasn't gotten any less fun. I do admit though, Microsoft ruined the game.

its not dead but i think alot of the servers i played on before are really bad now so i think the game is alot worse the before

Its far from being dead. The nice thing about mc is that it cannot get really old.. The graphic is made in a style that it cannot really age and as long as mojang keeps doing updates are recently upcoming 1.13 mc simply wont die

You don't see a lot of young adults playing Minecraft anymore. Kids still do, but as they get older, they move on to games like CS:GO or PUBG/Fortnite.

I mean in general, any modding community is going to be neckbeard adults trying to cash in on 13 year olds with their parent's credit card.
Majority of the Minecraft playerbase is indeed children.
