for girls i would compliment them on their clothing and depending on what they say, ride off of that. for example, i like your shoes. "oh thank you" means you'll have to chance. anything else means shes willing to talk and interested.

I walk up to people and introduce myself; then shake hands with them. Casual stuff.

Talk about what you're interested in or just ask some questions. Find out common interests.

People really like talking to me. And it gets annoying sometimes. I guess I'm too friendly.
But when I initiate, it's usually with a hello and a compliment. There's usually something that made me want to talk to a person in the first place, so I just go with that and move from there. So long as you're open and not overwhelming to the person, they're usually more inclined to respond well.

As simple as i can with "hi" or "hello" it's simple and effective
