Depending on your budget, you could receive a nice amount of players.
Unfortunately you need players to get players so if you can't get players within a month, it will not be profitable. I know this 5+ years of experience however when you start getting players, you start getting players!

I 100% percent believe that if you run a flawless GMod server with a great staff team, it will be profitable without a doubt. Advertisation and whatnot may be difficult because you can't exactly open a server and expect people to flood in. That's where forums come into play or even discords that allow advertising.

Hey guys, just wondering if its worth it to host a server.

If you can get a good server made, a good community, and know how to run servers, then it is possible to profit with Donations or VIP sales.
Wow, my own sig??? I have to start this sig with listing chill members, the following members are chill!

It takes a lot of work and investment to be able to get to the point where you're "profitable". Even then, the amount of money you make might not measure up to the time you put in. That $1000 in donations in your account might be the result of hundreds of hours of work put into the server and it's community, which comes out to less than minimum wage.

Just takes a lot of time and effort, no guaranteed profit either.

After building a large community, yes. You also don't want to seem like your doing it just for the money.

Very few servers make money off of their userbase. Just in general it's not likely that your server will make any money, and most of the time it will end up being a waste. Unless you have thousands of members a day and use things like donator ranks, its not beneficial.

It's like forums. Most forums cost much more to run than they actually make, unless you have new members constantly joining buying and looking at ads.

But I feel like running both cus of money isn't a good idea. I don't think your intention should be about making a ton of money if you try to run communities like this. You should actually try to build a community of people you like, rather than try and shill out for them
