So I wouldn't say it is dead but the old playerbase is definitely moving on from playing the game.

I find that the social aspect is lacking, it's harder to get a server out there and running with what you want than ever before.
Well putting up the server is easy, having the right tools and mods enabled - gametype etc is key.
