Laptop all the way: the portability is great for writing a paper in a coffee shop, and some are really good for games.

I feel like it depends on the situation. It's much better to do gaming on a desktop since the price/computational power ratio is quite good. When it comes to laptops, they are best suited for homework and tasks such as software engineering. Needless to say a desktop computer can do both, so perhaps the answer is a desktop computer. The only thing you run into with a desktop is location lock -- you can't transport it around easily.

Depends on what you're gonna use it for. If you're a traveler, obviously a laptop. Most gamers would pick a computer over a laptop any day.
