w3schools is the best place to get started with HTML and CSS
It's easy learning them, you learn more from examples than book in case of HTML and CSS

I learned from codecademy. It really doesn't matter though. After running through the course I just tried to make simple sites. Took me like an hour to get "fluent" with it.

I second w3schools. It's free and it can get you up and running quickly. Just spend at least an hour a day and experiment a lot

Codecademy and w3schools are the best places to get started. Learning the syntax and practice it right away.
