Maple Story is a MMO style game, believe it originated in Korea cause when I stopped playing, there was a lot of content left to be translated. As far as I can remember, you couldn't fight other players but you did quests and picked one of the classes you wanted. Again, they were adding new classes in when I left since I remember the marriage area was popular when it was brought over and pretty sure more had to be added in for couples but pretty sure by now, I would be lost trying to get back in to it.
