I think that cherobrin was originally as something mysterious to give the game a special atmosphere, then from it they wanted to make a mascot of the game. However, later decided to abandon this idea because all this did not quite fit into the sandbox in which the main occupation is building, although it is unfortunate that the game has not received a mysterious hue.

My father is actually the owner of the account Herobrine, and he was hired by Mojang to log into peoples singleplayers accounts and spook them. When the update says Herobrine removed that is just because he has gone on vacation.
