I initially started with Blender to familiarize myself with a 3D application but found that the material rendering in C4D to be much more simple with better results.

both are really good in my opinion
i prefer blender tho

start off with blender, move up to cinema 4d

Blender for just starting out and learning the basics of 3D design, layout and direction then once you feel comfortable move onto C4D as you can get better results

Cinema 4D all the way, mostly because it has integration with after effects.

I started off with C4D but switched to Blender, can't say I miss C4D but there sure are plugins from C4D that Blender just can't compare.
