Okay, as silly as this sounds - RenPy.

It is so straight forward You See What You Get - that its beautiful.
Nothing overly complex to learn - its all straight forward as hell.

You wanna make a VN? Get RenPy. It just works.

Been Working in unreal Engine for years now,and I can say the learning curve is steep, but you need to figure out what you want to do. If you want to do everything, yopu gonna put yourself in loads of problems.

If you prefer gameplay - Unity 3D (HD render pipe line is awesome, it makes Unity as fabulous asUnrealEngine 4)
If you want latest graphics -UnrealEngine (Although physics with this engine is quite hard to manage, but graphics are great.)

Alternatively you can buy license for Source 2 game engine, if it's available. Its great game engine too. Garry's mod 2 is in development based on Source 2 game engine (Its renamed S&box), so It should be commercially available.

Unreal is good because it looks better and has blueprints which can help with the basics but unity is simpler for most

I think it depends on what you are trying to do.
Starting completely fresh is super hard w/o any knowledge.
I would recommend starting to do something with the RPG Maker.
Yes it is cheesy, yes it is limited but it is super user friendly and helps you understanding the things you are doing.

After that (when you got experienced and knowledge how thinks basically work) move over to the Unreal Engine.
I am doing that right now and teaching it myself with YT videos and trial and error.

Best game engine is Unreal Engine 4. It has super realistic graphics, endless optimization possibilities, super realistic lighting and is open source.
Open source is of relevance, because it lets you using and animating DAZ3d models inside of UE4.
With UE4 you can make any game within a short time, mostly it's just about the arrangement of some static meshes and choosing some textures+some blueprint work.
And it's in C++ so it's much faster then any other engine.
Further it has a proven record of successful triple a games and it is being developed further (UE5 will be released this year with even more advanced performance optimizations for open world and lighting calculations)
