PHPStorm is definitely the one to use although you can get by for free with using another Jetbrains IDE, they still do the basic syntax highlighting and stuff.

I was using Sublime but I'm using VSC from several years and I prefer it but, finally, it's a personal choice.

visual studio code is very nice. YOu don't need a full IDE I don't think...

I would go with PhpStorm for sure If my device is powerful enough to handle it. Otherwise for a potato device, I would go with Sublime. Both of these are highly customizable, has great community to provide various plugins packages.
I work with Laravel and CI so I go with PhpStorm and for frontend I use Webstorm too.

PHPStorm for IDE. Sublime for quick text editing.

I've only used PHPStorm and SublimeText but you can also use Notepad++. The first two you need to pay for but if you are a student then you can probably get PHPStorm for free. I'm only a beginner so there might be a better choice out there but I can vouch for PHPStorm.

I also use Sublime - it's simple and to me, looks nice. Personally, I don't think IDE / text editor is worth spending a huge amount of time thinking about. You can write good code with anything; I have a colleague who just uses nano for everything.

Personally I use VIM, IDE's seem to complicate a lot of things
