Sony Vegas + Adobe After Effects + Particle Illusion 3 + Adobe Photoshop (for gradients and composites).

Honestly, my friends use a lot of free editing software.. and I use Vegas. Some of the things I can do in vegas that they can't in those free programs are really nice. Just make the investment :D

I recommend adobe premier. Its the most simple to use and its actually very easy to get used to. Its the best program out there for video editing.
