Doesn't take to long if you put time and effort into it, I'd suggest looking for a youtuber with a teaching style you enjoy and can understand well, and finding one of their video compilations

On average it takes around 15 days to 2months. Basics could be understood within a week however deeper applications and concepts of programming takes considerable time. You need to practise a lot to have efficiency. If you are looking to start programming, I advise to start off with either Java or C++. Both are in demand currently.

15 days to 2 months? ok...

I disagree wholly. If you want to start programming, start with a scripting language, PHP, Python, Javascript. Jumping into Java and C++ will only get you confused.

Also learn the fundamentals of programming before you learn the basics. Once you know one language well, adapting to others is much simpler, generally it's only syntax changes you'll need to wrap you're head around.

Recommending Java and C++ as first languages is like saying you should drive a 18 wheeler before you drive a car. Doable, but pretty effing hard.

Also pretty much every programming language is in demand, except Perl, no one likes Perl :monkey:

If you learn by yourself, probably (depending on the language) you will never be able to completely encode anything from scratch.

To be fair, it depends on what you're trying to do.

I have a functional knowledge of Lua and C++. Could I use them in a real context without the internet to look shit up? Hell no. Can I read the code and figure stuff out by looking things up on occasion? Yes. So, in short, as long as you have the internet, it's pretty quick to learn the basics of a new language, then you just need to know how to properly research things.

Depending of the language : Some weeks to ... a life !

Python is quick to learn (not too much APIs , easy style ...) , but useless (useful only to learn , i never saw somebody use python in their jobs)

C++ is considerably easier. Also the scripting languages you mentioned arent robust for building desktop based applications. (Python/JS arent quite good for desktop apps YET....i know there is electron framework but its still not quite robust)

It mainly depends on how talented you are but usually to learn the language it should take around 1 year, but there are other factors involved including which programming language you want to learn. Some are easier then others.
